If/Then

      • If/Then was an ambitious jump into directing for me, but I have definitely learned valuable lessons for if I direct again in the future.

      • Very proud of what the entire team has accomplished and thankful for everyone’s hard work.

      • For future directors:

        • Get an MD from the get-go who is committed to seeing the show through

        • Choose a show with a small pit so you don’t have to wrangle a pit split between backstage and the green room

        • Communicate, communicate, communicate, ESPECIALLY if you are co/assistant directing. 

        • Be flexible and be kind to everyone that you’re working with, since you’re all working TOGETHER to put on the show.

        • Thank you to everyone involved with If/Then! While the show never got to see the stage, the experience of working on this show was beyond fulfilling.

        • For future directors

          • Consider an anonymous feedback form more frequently for cast members. We decided to do it the week before break and we already started to implement new things the days leading up to spring break. We started office hours for the cast to learn choreo, music, and review scenes and it was well received

          • Do a non-Stage Troupe event cast/crew bonding early on

          • Don't be afraid to have multiple rehearsals happening at the same time. We did this more towards the last few weeks before break but we would simultaneously run music rehearsals with scene rehearsals happening in another room. Especially when a show is on the longer side, we found this not only insanely productive, but the actors did too

          • Send schedules out long in advance: One of the things we would do is send a multiple week schedule out after having the cast fill out their conflict google spreadsheets and lock them down. This provided the cast with the ability to plan in advance

          • Do character workshops by reading through with an actor their entire part and create a backstory! Made a world of difference with so many of our leads!

    • If/Then was an amazing experience, however short it might have been

    • Learned so much from everyone involved, like my team and Zach and also Sarah and Priya

    • Both my ATDs would be great TDs in the future if they want to (and I hope they do!)

    • All my department heads were so amazing and adaptive to our changing situation, and I'm very grateful that everyone was open to the changing context of the show and virtual tech week and everything.

    • Advice I would give to future TDs is to not be afraid to ask others for help when you need it and to stay on top of organization.

    • Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity, I learned a lot and I hope I helped others as well

    • Although I am very sad that If/Then never got to see the stage, I am still grateful for the opportunity to have been the SM for it

      • If you are tired and feeling burnt out, take the night off. The production can handle a rehearsal without you

      • Do not be afraid to speak up when it comes to people not filling out forms! A lot of the time people forget and reminders are important.

      • Don't be afraid to join in for warm-ups or discussions with the director! You're an integral member of both the tech team and the creative team!

Stage Troupe's COVID-19 Update

To Stage Troupe’s Membership:

As many of you know, it was announced today that BU is putting preventative measures in place starting this Monday to address the coronavirus outbreak. In addition to moving classes online and suspending large gatherings, the university has officially cancelled all student group events scheduled to take place between March 16th and April 13th. Of course, this will include Stage Troupe’s mainstage shows, Special Projects, meetings, rehearsals, and builds.

Though it is unclear exactly how these changes will impact Troupe this semester, certain things will not change. E-board will continue to hold meetings remotely (rather than in person) on a regular basis, so if you wish to be included in a meeting for any reason, please let one of us know and we will make it work. Additionally, I will continue to hold my regular office hours, and I invite you all to call or message me in lieu of attending them in person if you prefer to take the extra precautions. During the first week after spring break, I will hold additional office hours on Tuesday and Friday from 11 AM-12 PM in the West Campus Starbucks. If you have any questions or concerns or just want to talk to someone about how you’re doing, I welcome you all to either stop by during office hours or just shoot me a note at any time to talk. Finally, please note that the deadline for mainstage pitches for the Fall 2020 season is still Monday, March 16th at 11:59 PM!

I wish I could provide you with more concrete information at this time, but things are very much still up in the air. I assure you that E-Board will make every effort to keep lines of communication with the membership as open and transparent as possible as we receive updates and make adjustments to accommodate this situation. While I empathize with the profound disappointment this news provokes, I urge everyone to maintain optimism and composure going forward. In over seventy years, Troupe has certainly faced a number of obstacles, and in navigating them with grace we emerge stronger as a group and as individuals. I am confident that we will continue to make the best of this semester, even under these unusual circumstances. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to any member of E-Board if you have any questions or concerns, or just want to chat—we are here to support you in any way we can!

    • Organized and ran the card drive- it was so wonderful, we got over 60 cards

    • Had move in today- insanely fast and smooth

    • Card drive was really fun

    • We had a photoshoot at 808 on Monday for the cast and the crew members that were there. The photos have been edited by myself and David and shared with Abbey.

    • We launched our Facebook event page on Friday night, sent in our poster to GSU.

    • We took photos of the rest of the crew today during move-in. 

    • I am going to contact BCH this Monday to see if someone would like to talk before one of the shows. 

    • We will be doing the programs for the show this week, and doing the lobby decoration for the show tomorrow night!

Medea

    • Goal is to get a photoshoot next weekend on the 29th in 808 so we can get things going before break, but we are still trying to figure out how we can get access to it during the weekend. I am going to COM this week to request film access so we will know for sure in the next day or two. 

    • Started talking over T-shirt ideas and the question of whether we want to do sweatshirts or something else etc. We will be sending out a form soon to gauge what people want with prices and such

    • Future directors- found it useful to get actors off-book the second time they run a scene

    • Lay out expectations from the beginning

    • Went really smoothly overall

    • Happy with the dedication, everyone really pulled their weight

    • Things I learned: SO MUCH!! Technical skills, for one, like wallpapering and building flats! if anyone needs wallpapering seriously hit me up! Also management skills, it was weird at first to be thinking about the big picture rather than doing the hands on work but learning how to balance the creative visions of the director, myself, and the techies was an extremely valuable lesson!

    • Things I wish I knew: I can’t think of anything, it was certainly a trial and error process and my timeline evolved over time but learning as I went (learning by doing, some might say) was wonderful

    • Overall an amazing process to partake in

    • For future TD’s: 

      • Prioritize self-care! easier said than done but i found myself allowing people to leave or skip pretty frequently, this kept the process fun and no one grew resentful

      • The ATDs and I absorbed a lot of extra tasks   that i didn’t want to put on any dept, in my tech week notes I actually made a “TD team” section alongside all the other departments and I think this was really helpful, kept some stress off the departments and allowed us to have greater oversight over particularly tricky tasks (like fixing the wobbly table or making the oven open and close)

      • Remember to have fun! this seems dumb but so often we get caught up in the details and technical execution and forget that this is for fun!! dance to kids bop, eat lots of cake, wear funky sunglasses, and be merry :)

      • Organization was key- both for the process and for me personally. using a timeline to keep people accountable really worked and also doing a ton of my school/internship work ahead of time allowed me to be physically and mentally present during the 2.5 weeks of build, mini, and tech week.

    • For future SMs- take your own schedule into consideration , recognize your own worth in the process
