Announcement of Staged Reading & Summer Show

Hello Troupies! The executive board, with the assistance of the incoming board, has determined our 2015 summer show and our Fall 2015 staged reading.

The summer show will be This Is Our Youth, by Kenneth Lonergan, directed by Emily Prescott.

The staged reading will be The Skriker, by Caryl Churchill, directed by Kyle Tague.

Congratulations! Stay tuned for more information on summer show acting, tech, and producing opportunities.

Fall 2015 Staged Reading Pitches

Hello membership! Here are the pitches we received for the Fall 2015 staged reading:

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon, directed by Daniel Ehrenpreis & Brittany Jenkins The Pillowman, by Martin McDonagh, directed by Karen Loewy The Skriker, by Carolyn Churchill, directed by Kyle Tague

Tomorrow during General Meeting #5, the pitching teams will have an opportunity to explain their shows to the membership. Members will then have an opportunity to ask questions about the pitches and offer their feedback to the executive board, who will make their selection following the conclusion of the GM. Take this time to check out the shows and gather your thoughts.

Don't forget that tonight is your last chance to see Private Lives! Tickets can be purchased at troupeprivate.eventbrite.com

Step-by-Step Procedure for General Meeting #5

Hello Troupies! We understand there has been some confusion regarding what is happening with the potential for a recall vote originally described in an email sent to our membership earlier this week. Some members have come to us in the days since to help better understand the situation and ask clarifying questions, and we encourage everyone to always ask an executive board member when there is any confusion in any matter.

That said: in this blog post, we will be outlining what exactly will be happening this Sunday in regards to the potential for a recall vote. As we mentioned in that email, we greatly encourage you to read Really Really (which was attached in PDF form) prior to that meeting so that you may be fully informed.

Before that, though, there has been additional confusion as to the how and why of eboard asking the membership permission for a recall vote in the first place. Below is a brief recap.

Really Really was originally pitched and voted into our Fall 2015 season. In the weeks following this vote, the executive board was approached by a number of members (who have mostly chosen to remain anonymous, though they may step forward on their own accord if they so choose). These members expressed concern that the pitching team failed to adequately address concerns brought up by the reading committee - and in some cases, members felt the show was misrepresented on certain issues. Because of this, the involved membership felt that the show was not necessarily pitched fairly, and that some members that voted to include it in the season might have changed their selection had they been fully aware of the content. The executive board members who participated on the reading committee agreed that there was validity to the complaints.

The executive board examined the Stage Troupe Constitution (viewable under Forms & Resources on this website) to see how to respond to the membership concerns. There is no language, for or against or otherwise, regarding a situation in which the reading committee fails to adequately inform the membership about a show's content due to misrepresentation in the pitching team's responses. Some have asked why we did not clarify the discrepancies during the pitch meeting. Prior to the pitch meeting, the executive board agreed to maintain as neutral and silent as possible in response to all pitches. In other words, we did not anticipate needing to speak up, and we did not know if we could or should. In retrospect, we agreed that the executive board participating on the reading committee should have the right to moderate responses if they feel the pitching team is evading or misrepresenting a show. This will be our policy going forward.

We turned to Eric Jacobsen, our student group advisor, for guidance on the present situation. He explained there is no precedent for a scenario like this and offered a series of potential options in moving forward. We ultimately decided that because a significant contingent of the membership felt the show's content was misrepresented, the situation was worthy of pursuing and the show worthy of reexamination. We decided that the most reasonable option was to suggest a recall vote to the membership.

The possibility of a recall vote is not explicitly dictated one way or another in the Stage Troupe Constitution, and we cannot assume permission in calling for a recall. Instead, we are asking the membership for a one-time referendum on allowing a recall vote in this specific instance. This requires a simple majority, fifty percent or greater, to be approved and enacted. Another option we had was making the recall vote a specific "Executive Board Policy," created with the permission of Article 23; if we were to do this, a member could oppose the recall and call for a reversal of policy, but this would require an eighty percent vote against. We chose not to pursue an Article 23 solution, as it would require the executive board to take a hard stance that we deserve the right to have the recall and would imply the recall should be used in future scenarios. Because we anticipate "closing the loophole" for future semesters by allowing an executive board member on the reading committee to moderate potentially misrepresentative responses, we intend for this potential recall vote to be a one-time occurrence in this scenario.

A recall vote, if approved by the membership (via simple majority), would include a review and clarification of the potentially misunderstood content of the show. The pitching team (in this instance, Rachel Skalka) would be allotted time to respond to any lingering concerns. Both sides would be allotted six minutes, the same time limit as a regular pitch. After this, an anonymous vote would be taken, with simple majority ruling. If greater than fifty percent of the membership rules against Really Really in light of the new and/or clarified information, it will be removed from the season and pitches for the final main stage slot will be reopened. If less than fifty percent of the membership rules against Really Really, it stays in the season as planned - nothing changes.

This brings us to this Sunday's general meeting.

There are two separate issues up for vote here. Whether or not we examine the second is contingent on the outcome of the first. Below is the breakdown of what each scenario would entail.

1) Members will enter the meeting. At least twenty five dues paying members must be present to achieve quorum. If less than twenty five members appear, the meeting will be delayed or rescheduled.

2) Eric Jacobsen, our faculty advisor, will read off relevant portions of the Constitution and explain why there is currently no language regarding a recall vote. He will also review the purpose of the reading committee. The executive board will then make final statements on why we are asking for a recall vote, on principle. Specifics of Really Really will not be discussed.

3) An anonymous, written vote will be taken on whether or not the Stage Troupe Executive Board has a right to ask the membership for a one-time referendum "recall vote." Simple majority rules. Only members who have paid dues prior to this week's email may participate in this vote.

OUTCOME A: Less than fifty percent of the membership votes in favor of having a recall vote on principle. The recall vote does not occur, and the general meeting moves on to other topics (including Staged Reading pitches).

OUTCOME B: Greater than fifty percent of the membership votes in favor of having a recall vote on principle. The recall vote will occur, and we move on to Step 4.

4) The executive board and any concerned membership that wishes to speak will present their case as to why they felt Really Really's content was misrepresented. (Concerned membership must discuss with the executive board an intent to speak prior to the meeting.) Clarifying evidence will be presented. They will have six minutes to make their case.

5) The pitching team, Rachel Skalka, will offer any clarifications she sees fit. She will also have six minutes.

6) An anonymous, written recall vote will be taken on whether or not Really Really should remain in Stage Troupe's Fall 2015 season. Simple majority rules. Only members who have paid dues prior to this week's email may participate in this vote.

OUTCOME A: Less than fifty percent of the membership votes in favor of removing Really Really from the season. The show is not recalled and remains in the season as planned. Nothing changes.

OUTCOME B: Greater than fifty percent of the membership votes in favor of removing Really Really from the season. The show is recalled and is no longer part of the season. Democratic pitches will be reopened by any interested directors to be pitched and voted on prior to the end of the semester. If she so chooses, Skalka may pitch another show.

7) The general meeting moves on to other topics (including the Staged Reading pitches).

As always, if there is any further clarification needed, please feel free to email stage@bu.edu or contact an executive board member (their contact information is available on this website). We appreciate everyone keeping discourse professional.

Fall 2015 Pitch Season

Hello membership! For the second time, we will be releasing the main stage pitches received for our Fall 2015 season. Any dues paying member is encouraged to attend our Third General Meeting on March 22, 7 PM, in the Agganis Student Theater. At that meeting, you will hear the creative teams pitch their shows, as well as address any potential issues our reading committee came across in their evaluation. Then, you will have the opportunity to vote for the two mainstage shows you’d like to make up our Fall 2015 season. Keep in mind the Parents Weekend show is decided by the executive board and Dean of Students office; we will have made our selection by the time of the Third General Meeting, so you have a better picture of the season you are voting for. Additionally, keep in mind Staged Reading pitches are due April 1st, with one pitch being selected by the executive board. (This makes for a total of four shows - Parents Weekend, a staged reading, and two main stages.)

Remember that you are voting for a season, not just two shows you happen to like. And remember – democracy only works if people show up. No excuses: get there and vote!

Here are the shows that were submitted as main stages (in alphabetical order). Take advantage of the time you have from now until March 22nd to research the shows and ask the creative teams questions. An informed vote is a good vote!

Deathtrap - Kyle Tague The Pillow Man - Karen Loewy Really Really - Rachel Skalka Wit – Joseph McLaughlin

The following were submitted for consideration for Parents Weekend. The executive board will make a selection by the Third General Meeting on March 22nd.

Spring Awakening – Evan Creedon, Music Direction by Jessie Rosso

Finally, here are the pitches for Summer Show, which goes up for BU Orientation students over seven weeks throughout the summer. A summer show will be selected by the executive board before the end of the semester.

Betrayal - Aryeh Harris-Shapiro & Kyle Tague The Glass Menagerie - Katy Taylor This Is Our Youth - Emily Prescott Proof - Ali Edwards

Note: If you believe your pitch is missing, there’s a typo, or you notice any other sort of problem, please let me know. Have great weeks!

Spring 2015 Cast List

If you got cast - congratulations. Check your emails, expect something from your directing team immediately - given the lost time they'll want to get started as soon as possible. If you didn't get cast - understand that you are very talented, and sometimes there just aren't enough parts to fill. Please consider auditioning for us again - we'll be having auditions for One Acts & Monologues Festival later this semester.

Additionally, if you have any interest in teching or producing, we'll be having our Spring 2015 Tech Meeting TOMORROW at 11 AM in "The Space" (near Cane's Chicken). No experience is necessary, and attending doesn't signify commitment - just come here about the amazing opportunities our season can offer you. It's a great way to learn and add something awesome to your resume or portfolio.

Spring 2015 Season & Pitches for Staged Reading

Hello membership! For those of you who missed the voting period or news about our 3rd General Meeting (and shame on you), here is our Spring 2015 Season:

The Laramie Project (Charity Show), by Moises Kaufman, directed by Aryeh Harris-Shapiro Private Lives, by Noel Coward, directed by Joseph McLaughlin Hail Satan!, by Mac Rogers, directed by Kyle Tague

(Note: the above season order is not final.)

However! Our season is not yet complete. In addition to three mainstages, the executive board is restarting an old Stage Troupe tradition: the staged or semi-staged reading, which will go up in the Student Theater. For those unaware, a staged/semi-staged reading refers to a performance of a play without advanced technical elements. This means the production will have a directing team, a cast, a producing team, and a stage management team - but nothing else. It will be up to the directing team if there will be blocking or simple-to-acquire props, hence "semi-staged." The show will also not be memorized and will be performed with scripts in-hand, hence "reading."

There are many advantages to reintroducing the staged reading. It will provide expanded acting opportunities without putting additional stress on our current technical resources - it is in essence a "fourth show" without a crew. By not including technical elements, we have the special opportunity to put on a play that would not otherwise be possible in our Student Theater space (something to keep in mind when selecting a play to pitch). Does your favorite show require a three-story set or expansive fire effects? This may be a great opportunity to see it performed! In addition, by distilling the performance down to exclusively acting and performance, this show will have a unique opportunity to forge an intense, focused director-actor relationship and deep exploration of the chosen text.

Interested in pitching? Great! Download the "Staged Reading Pitch Form" (which will be available under "Forms & Resources" shortly), fill it out, and email the completed form along with a .pdf copy of the script to our president, Abi Oshins, at aoshins@bu.edu. The pitch deadline is December 3rd at 5 PM. Following that deadline, pitches and directing teams will be announced on this blog. On December 7th, following the 4th General Meeting and Space Cleaning, we will have a "town hall meeting" in which directing teams will briefly describe their show and vision and how it would work as a staged reading. Interested members may offer their thoughts and concerns. Following this meeting, the executive board will collectively make a selection to be posted later that evening.

Keep in mind the executive board is looking for a show that will translate well to a staged reading. In addition, we look favorably upon shows that have robust cast sizes and  reasonable gender ratios. (Keep in mind we currently only have an 18-actor season for our mainstages). Finally, consider pitching a show that is well-established and has good public awareness: a staged reading can be a hard sell, and we want people to see and enjoy our work. A more established work will more likely draw an audience.

Interested in acting in this staged reading? Auditions will be held one week following main stage auditions next semester. Actors cast in a main stage are asked to not audition in order to give the rest of our acting base additional opportunities.

That's about it. Have questions, comments, concerns? Feel free to email stage@bu.edu or raise them at any open executive board meeting (Sundays at 6 PM). Have great weeks!

Fall 2014 Cast List (and other ramblings)

Okay, go ahead and CTRL-F your name. When you're done, come back up here and read me.

Did you get cast? Let me be the first to offer a sincere, hearty congratulations! Stay tuned, as your directing team will contact you shortly to set up a first meeting.

If you did not get cast - I know it sucks. It's happened to me. It happens to everyone at some point in their lives. Nothing I can say is going to make it better in this moment. But know this - just because you weren't cast, it doesn't mean you aren't a good actor, and it doesn't mean we didn't want you. This was literally our most competitive season in the better part of a decade, due to both a lower show count and an unprecedented turnout of auditioning talent, new and old. Know that even if you weren't cast, we appreciate and love you, and we want you to stick around. I've talked to so many folks who auditioned for Troupe their first semester, didn't get cast, and never came back -- not because they lost interest, but because they assumed we didn't want them, or that they lacked in ability! This couldn't be further from the truth. Inevitably, extremely talented people aren't going to make the cast list due to sheer differences in supply and demand. But we have way more opportunities available to you this semester - come have fun and make theater with us. I promise, you won't regret it.

Acting, writing and teching opportunities are available with no auditions or experience required October 3rd-4th for our 24 hour theater COMBAT event. If you're interested -- email me at stage@bu.edu, I'll add you to the list, and you'll be contacted as it gets closer. One Acts & Monologues Festival is also approaching, and with it, a plethora of new acting opportunities -- if you're on the email list, you'll receive more information in the coming weeks.

Finally, our TECH MEETING is September 14th (this Sunday) at 2 PM in "The Space" (check the "Facilities" tab for directions). I know, I know - I can sense that hesitation and insistence through the computer - "I'm an actor, not a techie." Stage Troupe's motto is "learning by doing" - if you've never tried tech before, there literally isn't a better time to start. I was exclusively an actor when I came to BU, and now I'm proficient in stage management, sound design, and producing -- not a bad thing to add to your résumé or portfolio. We'll teach you every element of whatever department interests you -- lighting, sound, set design, stage management, producing and more -- and help you grow as a techie, an artist, and a leader. We also love our techies - they actually make up at least half of our group and become absolutely integral to the show production process. I'm assuming some of you might be reading this, crestfallen, but on the fence. To someone who's been there - do it. Come check out the tech meeting. You'll be glad you did. And guess what? Once you're part of our family (and yes, Troupe is a family), it'll be time for spring auditions before you know it -- and then you've got another shot at getting that part. Life's too short to give up after one try.

I know this has been a trying week for all of us -- auditions are always stressful, no matter the result. Everyone be safe and enjoy your weekend.

Fall 2014 Callbacks List

Hi Troupies! I hope you've enjoyed sweating all evening/refreshing this page relentlessly. After you've immediately scrolled down to see if your name is on this list, please READ THE REST OF THIS POST!

If your name is on one or more callback lists - fantastic, congratulations! Callbacks take place tomorrow, Thursday the 11th, from 5-10 PM, in PSY/SOC B51. The directing/creative team may email you additional instructions, so please check the email you provided on your audition sheet. Otherwise, please show up PROMPTLY AT 5 and expect to stay the entire time!

If you have an unavoidable conflict, please email stage@bu.edu IMMEDIATELY with the details of your conflict and when you expect to arrive. I will forward your email to the directing team, and they will do their best to accommodate you.

Finally, if you need to drop a callback, it's okay. You can drop one at any time while you're at callbacks - at the beginning, in the middle, or at the very end. Just let the relevant directing team know as soon as you do. Also note that if you are cast and then drop a show, you will not be permitted to audition for Stage Troupe for one semester.

If your name is NOT on any callback list - don't fret! This was our most competitive season in recent memory, but we still want you to be part of the Troupe family! Our tech meeting is coming up on September 14th at 2 PM in "The Space" near Raising Cane's - by all means, come and check it out... you may find a new passion in one of our technical departments!

Additionally, we have more acting opportunities coming up! COMBAT, our 24 hour theater event, is still looking for writers and actors - no auditions required. If you're interested, email stage@bu.edu, and I'll sign you up! The event takes place from 8 PM October 3rd to 8 AM October 4th for writers, and 8 AM to 8 PM October 4th for actors and technicians. Troupe has actually won an official Boston University award of excellence for this event, so don't hesitate to join us!

The Fall One Acts & Monologues Festival is also on the horizon later in the semester - additional information will be emailed out once we have details on our show lineup and audition details!

Now then, enough plugging. Without any further ado, the Fall 2014 Callbacks List...

Our wonderful videographer has done a great job of recording Troupe history this year, but he will be trading in his duties for secretarial ones next year- which means we’re looking for someone to fill his shoes! This position is completely voluntary, but is a great way to take on a little more responsibility and get further involved in Troupe! If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to email Kyle at kptague@bu.edu.

Welllll, that’s all for now. Have a great weekend! Enjoy the celebration today, but stay smart and safe! See you all soon!

Spring GM 3 Recap: Spring One Acts & Fall 2014 Season!

We had quite the eventful weekend this past week! Surely most of you caught the Oscars, but we have some award-winning performances and productions of our own to acknowledge!

So, we would like to begin by congratulating all those involved in this year’s enchanting TECH SHOW and of course, Charity Show 2014- Doubt: A Parable! All the hard work, talent, and fun that went into both truly paid off in hilarious Tech Show performances and a successful Charity Show that brought in over $1,630 for Prevent Child Abuse America! Thank you, membership, for all your incredible dedication and support.

Next, but certainly not least, the membership has spoken, and I have the privilege of announcing

Stage Troupe’s Fall 2014 Season:

HOSTS for the event: Eli Brenna and Kyle Tague!

Spring GM 4- Eboard Voting

Our next meeting, April 6 at 7pm in the Student Theater, we will be voting on our new Executive Board! We will be accepting nominations right up until voting occurs, so if you’re interested at all and didn’t get a chance to get nominated this time, don’t worry, there is still plenty of time!

Those nominated are definitely encouraged to come and talk to our current Eboard! There’s no better resource than those of us doing the jobs and we obviously love Troupe enough to talk about it forever, so don’t be shy and let’s chat!

On Stage Next…

Our first mainstage of the season- Raised in Captivity- opens the week after spring break! Join us March 20-22, 2014. Performances will be held in the Student Theater at Agganis Arena beginning at 8pm. Tickets will be sold pre-sale on Eventbrite and at the door for $5 with membership card and $6 general admission. We can’t wait to start off our mainstage season with this great production!  RSVP through the Facebook Event!

That’s all for now Troupies, have a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break. Travel safely, and we’ll see you in a week!
