Fall 2011 Season

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
Book by: Hugh Wheeler
Music by: Stephen Sondheim
Directed By: Ryan McPhee and Abigail Smith
Please join Stage Troupe in celebrating Parents Weekend 2011 with the production of this Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler masterpiece, recently revived on Broadway starring Academy Award winner Catherine Zeta Jones. With a breathtaking score including the staple “Send in the Clowns” and a book full of romance, comedy, and passion, A Little Night Music is sure to captivate an audience of students and parents alike.
It is the turn-of-the-century Scandinavia. Middle-aged Fredrik Egerman brings his young wife Anne to a play starring “the one and only” Desiree Armfeldt. It is soon revealed that Desiree and Frederik are in fact former lovers. The two begin to rekindle their romance, enraging Desiree’s current lover, a pompous Count. In her attempts to win Fredrik back, the actress has her sage mother invite the Egerman family to their county estate. This “Weekend in the Country” brings together Frederik, Anne, Desiree and the Count, as well as Fredrik's son, Desiree's daughter, the Count's scathing wife, and the Egermans' lusty maid. With the beautiful estate as a backdrop, love is discovered and reawakened, and the night smiles upon the young and the old.
BUG
Written By: Tracy Letts
Directed by: Chris Hamilton
Agnes is afraid. Afraid of her recently paroled abusive ex-husband, Jerry, afraid of the breathy, wordless phone calls that keep her up at night, afraid of sleeping alone in the seedy Oklahoma City motel room she's holed herself up in. Along comes Peter, a soft-spoken, thoughtful young man, who gives her the love and companionship she's desperately longed for. Then the bugs appear; tiny, nearly invisible bugs that crawl under your skin and feed on your blood. As Agnes and Peter's paranoia grows, dark character secrets are revealed, giving way to government conspiracies, pure psychological terror, and more bugs. Millions and millions of bugs.
HEDDA GABLER
Written by: Henrik Ibsen
Directed by: Marcus Doyle
Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler has stood as the pinnacle of dark, psychological plays for more than a hundred years. It illustrates the story of a woman whose desires and motives outlay the expectations and restraints imposed on her by society. Her struggle for freedom and control over her life drives her to a desperate and expressive end. This play has been produced thousands of times with hundreds of interpretations, transcending the boundaries of time and culture, finding novel meaning as each generation explores the text and craft of Ibsen's masterpiece.
ALL MY SONS
Written By: Arthur Miller
Directed By: Elise Roth and Mike Halpern
It is August 1947 in the backyard of the Keller residence, located in the outskirts of an American town. Joe Keller, a “man among men,” ran a machine shop during the war that turned out defective airplane parts, causing the death of countless young soldiers. Years later, Joe leads a successful life while his former business partner, Herbert Deever, is locked up behind bars. While Joe carries around this burden of guilt, his wife, Kate, is haunted by nightmares of their missing son Larry. Their other son, Chris, wishes to marry childhood neighbor Ann, his brother Larry’s lover and daughter of Herbert, much to the dismay of Kate. Following the arrival of Ann’s bitter brother George, Joe's terrible secret is unveiled and the Keller household is turned upside down.
Through the brilliant words of legendary playwright Arthur Miller, the problems of a post-war suburban American family are explored and reach an emotional climax that is electrifying in its intensity and powerfully raw in its sincerity.

URGENT: Weather vs. Auditions

Hello all you talented thespians!

If you have been watching the weather today you may have seen that there is a big ol' storm headed our way Wednesday/Thursday. You may have also noticed that we are holding auditions on Wednesday. In the event that BU is closed due to weather on Wednesday, it is Stage Troupe's policy to also close (and BU won't let us use the facilities which means you would have to audition outside...). THEREFORE: We are strongly encouraging all able-bodied auditioners to audition TONIGHT (Tuesday) in lieu of tomorrow. This will make our/your lives all easier and happier in the event that it is stormy and disgusting and BU closes down. So hopefully we'll see most of you tonight in CAS 211 from 6-9pm!

As an addendum, if BU is cancelled on Wednesday the e-board is coming up with a contingency plan and you all will be notified immediately concerning further auditions/callbacks. As always, if you have any questions, please email stage@bu.edu, tweet at us, or comment on the blog.

Stay Warm and Dry!

Adrien Smith, Secretary

"Almost, Maine"

Our annual summer production premieres tonight! "Almost, Maine" is directed by Adam Lebowitz-Lockard and Ian Cohen, and will be performed for incoming freshmen during Orientation sessions. "What's it about?" you might ask. A brief synopsis taken from http://www.almostmaine.com/:

On a cold, clear, moonless Friday night in deepest winter, the northern lights hover over the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. All is not what it seems as Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected, unusual, and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. And ache is all around as love is--literally--lost, found, and realized. An enchanting midwinter night's dream, Almost, Maine inventively explores the mysteries of the human heart, touching audiences with laughter, heartbreak, and hope.

The show is FREE and there will be 7 performances on Wednesday nights at 8 pm in the Agganis Student Theater:

June 10th, 17th, 24th and July 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th

So if you're in Boston or planning on visiting, come see this show!

Some more audition announcements:

A graduate director at the School of Theatre is looking for some people to fill some small roles in the play, "Two Sisters and a Piano" by Nilo Cruz. The parts are small, without any lines, and the show runs the weekend of Feb 14-16. E-mail Rey Lopez at rey@reylopez.com if interested.

Willing Suspension Productions is looking for a Mother. More specifically, we're looking for a female actor willing to adopt a small-medium size role in a production already under rehearsal. The play is A Mad World, My Masters by Thomas Middleton, a city comedy from 1608. The role is a lot of fun - dirty jokes abound - and the cast is great. The show dates are March 5-7, and rehearsals are 1-3 times per week (every Sunday with some possible additional weekday rehearsals). Interested parties should email wsuspen@bu.edu to set up an audition appointment ASAP. Willing Suspension is a theater group here on campus run by the graduate English department. They put on productions of Shakespeare's contemporaries. The cast and crew is made of graduate and undergraduate students. Come join your fellow Stage Troupies Jarman Day-Bohn, Don Meeg, Paul Hansen, Owen Schmitt, and Lucas Griswold in this incredibly fun theater group!

Auditions for the Jewish Theatre Guild's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat are this week. Vocal audition are Monday and Tuesday Feb 4th and 5th from 7-10pm in CAS 114B. Dance Auditions are Wednesday Feb 3rd from 5:30-7:30. Callbacks are that Thursday. Contact director Yosi Merves for more information at ymerves@bu.edu.
The Jewish Theatre Guild is a newer performing arts group whose performance and rehearsals are sensitive to the Jewish Sabbath and Holidays (ie, not on Friday nights, not during
Passover), although you absolutely DO NOT need to be Jewish to be involved.
